Henna is a dye made from dried, powdered leaves of Lawsonia inermis, resulting in a reddish stain. It has been used since at least the Ancient Egyptian period as a hair and body dye.

-
The paste is made from henna powder (Lawsonia inermis), often mixed with water, lemon juice, and essential oils like tea tree or eucalyptus to enhance the stain.
-
Duration: The design usually lasts for one to three weeks, depending on skin type and care, as it is a temporary, non-tattoo stain on the surface of the skin.
-
Natural henna results in a brown, reddish-brown, or deep orange stain.

Steps to follow for the darkest possible stain (when using natural henna):
-
After application: Leave the henna paste on for at least 6–8 hours or overnight.
-
Proper Removal: Do not wash the dried paste off with water. Scrape it off gently with a butter knife or spoon.
-
Avoid Water: Keep your hands away from water for 12–24 hours after removing the paste, as water stops the oxidation process that makes the stain turn darker.
-
Apply Oils: After removing the paste, rub on coconut, mustard, or olive oil. Some users recommend using Vicks VapoRub for its intense heating properties, which can help deepen the color.
-
Pre-application care: Wash hands thoroughly to remove oils and lotions before application to allow better penetration.
-
Extended Time: Leave the henna paste on for at least 6–8 hours or overnight.
-
Sealant: Apply a mixture of sugar and lemon juice to the dried mehndi to prevent it from flaking and to keep it moist, which enhances the dye color.
-
Heat Application: Heat helps release the dye. You can steam your hands over a pot of water with toasted cloves or gently warm your hands over a heater to promote a deep color.
